Our mission
We believe that the universe is best served when you follow your life force: the inner animating engine that propels you into the version of yourself that most wants to come alive. The purpose of the residency is to amplify and empower founders with overflowing life force who have big ideas and even bigger hearts. The three core offerings of the residency are:
Space – We offer a literal and figurative home where you can expand into your boldest ideas. Our environment - spacious, intentional, alive - permits curiosity, rest, and sustained, deep work.
Structure – We remove friction. Chores, preparing meals, social obligations, and anything else that distracts you will be eliminated from your daily flow. We help you tune into the rhythms of your own productivity, creativity, and health. You’ll have scaffolding, not constraints.
Support – You’ll join a handpicked cohort of builders who are equally kind and formidable. They’ll challenge you, cheer for you, and become your greatest champions and co-conspirators. By pooling your resources and networks, you will achieve even greater heights together.
Who are you?
You are a founder with unbridled enthusiasm and optimism. You have a track record of creating awesome works, and you are searching for a place where you can bring your magnum opus to life while challenging yourself alongside others of a similar caliber. Your life force has many outlets, flowing in many directions. You are a sculptor, an engineer, a poet, a creator and a creative, a dancer, a philanthropist, a storyteller, a community builder, a researcher, a chef, and a lover of wisdom. You seek mastery, you seek flow, you seek communion. You hope to reach your death bed having lived an examined life, and you are committed to the service of liberation. You are crafting your soul, and we want to help you.
Who are we?
Abundance House is an initiative of Impact Labs, a 501(c)(3) in the tech-for-good ecosystem that has been organizing events and creating community since 2017. The goal of Impact Labs has always been to inspire and empower engineers and technologists to use their skills for the betterment of the world, and creating a residency that provides a space for high-agency, talented, morally ambitious builders is a natural extension of our mission. In addition to the peer-support of the other residents at Abundance House, you will have access to the entire Impact Labs network, and we will move heaven and earth to connect you with the right mentors, funders, and talent that can help you thrive.
What will you work on?
The residency is designed for builders who are working on projects that have a high probability of benefitting the world. The program will be of greatest utility to those who: A) have a clear vision of what they would like to achieve, B) are working on a project that serves the universe, and C) would benefit from a period of hyper-focused commitment to their goals. The residency is agnostic to whether you are working on a non-profit or a for-profit venture, but we aim to support founders who have a mind towards sustaining their craft beyond the residency (which often entails some sort of revenue-producing model). It is our hope that you will be able to accomplish more in the 3 months of the residency than you would be able to in 3 years without it. As our name implies, we are especially focused on creating a home for people who are working within the budding Abundance movement, which broadly focuses on energy security, housing reform, scientific discovery, governance, and more. We are also interested in supporting people who are founding or earning to give, and/or working on projects within the effective altruism ecosystem, such as public health, animal welfare, and safeguarding our longterm future. Most importantly, however, we aim to support people who are following their life force and working on their dreams from a sense of love, not obligation.
When?
The residency will run from September 4th through November 25th. Preference will be given towards applicants who are able to stay for the entire duration of the program, but if you can only come for a subset of the weeks (minimum 4), you are still welcome to apply/attend. You are free to leave the property whenever you wish, but the purpose of the program is to commit to deep work, so trips away should be kept to a bare minimum.
Where?
The program will be held in Marin County at a beautiful 10-bedroom home on a lush, sprawling private estate. The distance from the city creates a cloister-like environment where you can feel focused and free. The 8,000 sqft home is surrounded by forested mountains, and the house itself has luxurious amenities and lightning fast wifi. You have the choice between a private room or dormitory-style shared rooms.
Timeline
Submit your application by June 30th to hear back by July 5th. We will conduct a round of interviews from July 5th to 10th, and the cohort of 12 residents will be finalized by July 15th. If accepted, plan to sublet your home from September through November, and make arrangements to arrive at the house by noon on September 4th for the program kickoff.
What is the cost?
Abundance House is free for residents. We provide rooms (some private, some shared) and office space for the duration of the program, and all meals are prepared by a private chef. We are able to finance Abundance House from the generous support of philanthropic organizations that believe in our mission. It is our hope that should you find Abundance House valuable in your evolution, you will consider becoming a patron and supporting future residents.
