Our mission

We support funded founders who are working on companies that, if successful, will have a transformative impact on society and the planet. We identify people with high life force: the inner animating engine that propels you into the version of yourself that most wants to come alive, create great things, and help others. The purpose of the residency is to amplify and uplift founders with overflowing life force who have big ideas and even bigger hearts. The three core offerings of the residency are:

  1. Space - we offer a literal and figurative home where you can expand into your boldest ideas. Our environment - spacious, intentional, energizing - permits exploration as well as sustained, deep work.

  2. Structure - we remove friction. Chores, preparing meals, social obligations, and anything else that distracts you will be eliminated from your daily flow. We help you tune into the rhythms of your own productivity, creativity, and health. You’ll have scaffolding, not constraints.

  3. Support - you’ll join a handpicked cohort of builders who are equally kind and formidable. They’ll challenge you, cheer for you, and become your greatest champions and co-conspirators. By pooling your resources and networks, you will achieve even greater heights together.

Who are you?

You are a founder with unbridled enthusiasm and optimism working on a company that has already secured venture funding. You have a track record of creating awesome works, and you are searching for a place where you can bring your magnum opus to life while challenging yourself alongside others of a similar caliber. Your life force has many outlets, and it flows in many directions. Your friends would describe you as extremely capable and extremely curious. You are a sculptor, an engineer, a poet, a creator and a creative, a dancer, a philanthropist, a storyteller, a community builder, a researcher, a chef, and a lover of wisdom. You seek mastery, you seek flow, you seek communion. You hope to reach your death bed having lived an examined life, and you are committed to the service of bettering our world. You are crafting your soul, and we want to help you.

Who are we?

Abundance House is an initiative of Impact Labs, a community in the tech-for-good ecosystem that has been supporting purpose-driven entrepreneurs and engineers since 2017. The goal of Impact Labs has always been to inspire and empower technologists to use their skills for social good, and creating a residency that provides a space for high-agency, talented, morally ambitious builders is a natural extension of our mission. In addition to the peer-support of the other residents at Abundance House, you will have access to the entire Impact Labs network, which includes funders and mentors, along with thousands of highly motivated, dedicated engineers. We will move heaven and earth to connect you with the right people along your journey who can help you thrive.

What will you work on?

The residency is designed for builders who are working on companies that have a high probability of benefitting the world. The program will be of greatest utility to those who: A) have a clear vision of what they would like to achieve, B) are working on a company that will positively shape society, and C) would benefit from a period of hyper-focused commitment to their goals. It is our hope that you will be able to accomplish more in the 3 months of the residency than you would be able to in 3 years without it. As our name implies, we are especially focused on creating a home for people who are working within the budding Abundance movement, which broadly focuses on energy security, housing reform, scientific discovery, improved governance, and more. We are also interested in supporting people who are founding or earning to give, and/or working on projects within the effective altruism ecosystem, such as public health, animal welfare, and safeguarding our longterm future. Most importantly, however, we support people who are following their life force and working on their dreams from a place of excitement, not obligation.

When?

The residency will run from October 1st through December 21st. Preference will be given towards applicants who are able to stay for the entire duration of the program, but if you can only come for a subset of the weeks (minimum 4), you are still welcome to apply/attend. You are free to leave the property whenever you wish, but the purpose of the program is to commit to deep work, so trips away should be kept to a minimum.

Where?

The program will be held in Marin County at a beautiful 12-bedroom home on a lush, sprawling private estate. The distance from the city creates a cloister-like environment where you can feel focused and free. The 8,000 sq ft home is surrounded by forested mountains, and the house itself has luxurious amenities and lightning fast wifi. We provide individual bedrooms and shared coworking space for the entirety of the program, and all meals are prepared by a private chef.

What’s the timeline?

Submit your application by August 15th to hear back by August 20th. You may apply as a team or as an individual. We will conduct a round of interviews from August 20th to 25th, and the cohort of 12 residents will be finalized by August 30th. If accepted, plan to sublet your home from October through December, and make arrangements to arrive at the house by October 1st at 5pm for the program kickoff.

What is the cost?

Founders pay a program fee of 0.1 and 0.5% of the equity in their companies, depending on valuation and duration of stay. If you determine that the program wasn’t valuable to you after it concludes, we’ll happily return your equity.
